Pentecost: Happy Birthday Church!

Welcome

Welcome to worship this morning! Today we celebrate Pentecost, when the promised Holy Spirit came and filled the disciples in Jerusalem, enabling them to speak in the native languages and touch the hearts of people from various parts of the world. This morning we give thanks that the Holy Spirit dwells in our hearts and is leading our church into the future that God has for us.

Remember, our theme this year is "embracing the exciting and abundant life of the Holy Spirit." Today as we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit let us give thanks with joy and expectation at the incredible ways that God will continue to act and move in our church and community.

Call to Worship

Read Aloud:

Praise the Lord all you people! Come and praise his wonderful name!

Just as the Lord had promised, he sent the Holy Spirit upon his church.

The Lord said to the prophet Joel, "and afterward,I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.

Let us give thanks and celebrate that faithfulness and power of the Lord God Almighty!

Unity of the World Wide Church

Last week we spoke together the Apostles Creed and remembered that statement of faith affirmed by believers all around the world. Ephesians 4:3-6 says, "Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Let us give thanks for the unity we have through the blood of Jesus and the Holy Spirit!

Come Holy Spirit!

A Pentecost Prayer

Read aloud or pray in your heart:

Father God,

Thank you for sending your Holy Spirit upon the church in Jerusalem at Pentecost. Thank you for growing your church and spreading it throughout the whole world. Lord God, we pray that you would send your Holy Spirit powerfully upon us as individuals and as a church. May we too proclaim your wonderful acts. Use us to speak to the hearts of those who do not know you so that your church might grow here in Middleville and beyond. Renew our church through the power of the Holy Spirit, renew our hearts, renew the face of the earth and let justice and righteousness reign.

All this we pray in Jesus name and in the power of the Holy Spirit, amen.
